How Are Electric Wheelchairs Different From Manual Ones?

Just because you could be living with the debilitating conditions of arthritis or osteoporosis, doesn’t mean that you have to be limited in your mobility, especially not in today’s world. While this is truly a concern for people facing their golden years or who may have survived a handicapping accident, it doesn’t have to be a grave one, thanks to the technological advances of electric wheelchairs.

The first advancement that you will recognize over traditional wheelchairs is that the original design relied on the force that you transfer to the big wheels to make you go. This made the premier designs very clunky and large, and certainly not necessarily pleasant to look at or sit in. You only had slight control over speeding up and stopping, but not necessarily over turning.

Secondly, wheel chairs were not very pleasing to the eye. Although it should be quite obvious that these tools were more about function than form, it doesn’t make it easier to classify them as beautiful works of art. They did serve a purpose, and they served it well, as they supported patients who sat while nurses pushed through the hospital to get them where they needed to go.

When electronics were added to wheel chairs, it really started to change the way people regarded them. It gave people with greater disabilities more opportunity for personal mobility which is not only convenient but very rewarding and fulfilling to those who once had to solely rely on others.

Perhaps their rise in popularity is the reason why manufacturers began to make them more comfortable too. The seats became more resembling of automobile bucket seats along with the appropriate head rests and even similar fabric and stitching. Even arms were added, which were necessary to comfortably control the joystick or other conveniently placed controls.

If you are considering an item like this for yourself or a loved one, you simply want to remember two words: mobility and comfort. The primary goal, obviously, is to be able to move freely, but you also want to be as comfortable as possible, especially if this is where you’ll spend most of your time.

When it comes time to shop for electric wheelchairs there is no better place to look than online. The Internet provides access to a wide catalog of brands and styles all with different benefits. This should make it easier to reach a decision.

Stair Lifts For Handicapped and For Disabled

As you age, you may experience extreme disabling stress on your knees. This becomes a huge problem when you climb or go down the stairs. Stairlifts are for anyone with knees problems or other limited mobility problems. Stairlifts for handicapped persons makes it easier and safer for them to move around their floors. Here are some things for you to consider before making a purchase.

There is a common misconception that stairlifts attach to the wall. Stairlifts have a rail which attaches to the treads of the stairs. This is for both straight stairlifts and curved stairlifts. All the weight of the chair lift is supported on the rail. So even if you have weak walls, you can install a stairlift.

The installation time for most straight stairlifts take about 2-3 hours, whereas curved lifts can take 5-6 hours. The manufacturing and measuring time for curved stairlifts is significantly longer than straight stairlifts and may take weeks just to get the proper customisations. This is important to take into consideration if you need a stairlift done in time.

If you choose a stairlift with a battery option, you can rest assured, that the lift will not confine you to a floor if the power ever goes out. The batteries tend to charge when the stairlifts are not in use.

Stairlifts are capable of supporting various weights ranging from 250 lbs to 400lbs, depending on your model.

Prices for straight stairlifts range from $2000 to $4000 and curved stairlifts are typically more than double the price, in the $5000 to $10000 range. Some curved customisations may even go into the $15000 range. If these prices are too high for you, there are used and rental stairlifts that have payments on a monthly basis. They tend to require more servicing because of their former use.

Programs like Medicare will not pay for stairlifts because it is a home modification. However, your private insurance or other government programs like Medicaid may pay for some of the costs. The vendors have to agree to accept these programs. If you are without insurance, there are many loans and financing offers from stairlift dealers that are willing to work with you.

Decreased mobility in your older age or having a handicap should not be something to fear. No longer do people have to leave their homes because they are unable to reach their bedrooms. They will not have to worry about the dangers in climbing stairs. Stairlifts can provide them with the comfort and independence they seek.

Handicap Scooters – Changing the Way We Move As We All Get Older

Often called mobility scooters or even medical scooters, handicap scooters give those who have difficulty getting around the freedom to move about on their own. They have gained popularity in recent years due to advancements in technology and design. And with affordable plans and many being covered by Medicare these vehicles are filling a vital need in our aging society.

You will recognize these units out in public although their design has drastically changed. The older models were bulky and hard to maneuver. There was very little turning radius or power and they didn’t have the ability to go very far between charges. All of that has changed. Now these units have sleeker designs and are more compact, delivering more power than ever.

Handicap scooters are made from the perspective of a disabled person. This helps to cover many needs that may be encountered. For example, the seats swivel outward to allow easier entry and exit. Also there is plenty of room between the seat and the handlebar.

The scooters come with standard tread wheels, but you can upgrade to ones with extra traction and enhanced suspension in case you have to traverse over terrain other than a paved road. This comes in handy for those who live in the country.

But the biggest enhancements have been in the power department. The motors now used on handicap scooters are not only quieter, but deliver more power quickly. They are designed to conserve battery power as much as possible instead of using it up rapidly.

And even though they come with a standard size battery you can always upgrade to larger ones or even go with a dual battery model to give you more running time. This comes in handy if you like to go shopping or gliding through the mall stores.

Some of these handicap scooters are even classified as road legal, meaning they can be used on the open road though that is not something I would take a chance on outside a quiet home neighborhood. They can travel up to 8 miles an hour. The only requirement is that they have adequate lights and signals, which they do.

Medical Wheelchair Options

The reality of life with a disability can be a crushing shock. It will espouse many changes of many different sorts. What is important is that you not dwell on the negative. Fully accepting your new situation is absolutely essential to moving forward with your life in a healthy and productive way. By looking for the positives in this seemingly tragic development, you will start down the path to recovery quickly.

Beginning life every day in the seat of a medical wheelchair is actually a chance for a very different view. Not the type of view afforded by a scenic vista, but more of a philosophical vantage point. Whatever the cause for your handicap, the upshot is that you are still very much alive. You may have changed, but the world has not. It is as beautiful and ever-changing as it has always been. The possibility for reflection on the past is always there, but what’s more important is to focus on the future, and your goals and aspirations.

Another item for consideration regarding your life in a medical wheelchair is how comfortable can you make yourself. Just because you are handicapped, in most cases you don’t have to live with pain or discomfort. A well crafted and properly adjusted wheelchair can go a long way towards alleviating any pain. By custom matching a chair to your specific needs you can get a long, high performance life out of your chair. The myriad designs available should give you an idea of what is possible. Regardless of where you need your chair, be it work, home, or even on the race track, the right model is out there. The important thing is to remember that you must keep moving towards your goals down life’s amazing path.

Do you think that a wheelchair scooter is your thing?

If you are at a point in your life that you need to choose what type of wheelchair you will be using there are a few things you will need to take into consideration. You will have a wide choice of wheelchairs to choose from and even a motorized wheel chair scooter is an option.

A few things to consider

A few questions come to mind when we need to think about what type of wheelchair we are going to choose. One of the first things you will have to do is to see if the strength that you still have. Is your upper body strong enough to move about in a manual wheel chair or would it be better to go for a motorized chair.

Maybe it’s not something you should decide by yourself and have a talk with your doctor and/or physical therapist so they can giver their advice concerning the right type of wheel chair. Other things that the professionals will probably think about are how the brakes on the different types of chairs will work and how they are placed. They will also think about how much assistance you may need every day and how this affects the type of chair you choose.

A wheelchair, both the manual and motorized versions, will have more then one type of seat and cushion, not only so the person sitting in it is comfortable but also to prevent sores from developing because you are constantly sitting down. You should always make sure that the seat works for you.

In contrast to the the motorized version a manual wheelchairs can often be made very light, and weigh as little as twelve pounds. And this makes them very maneuverable and a lot easier to transport. On the other hand this makes that they are not so durable and should be something you take in to consideration.

What has a motorized wheel chair to offer.

They come with three or four wheels and the seat often is higher then a manual wheel chair. A lot of motorized wheelchair scooters have a basket in the front so you can carry some items in an easy way. They can’t, however, be places in a van in such a way that you can drive it.

Another big plus of this type of wheel chair is that most can carry person of two hundred fifty pounds, there are even a few models that can go as high as five hundred pounds and you can imagine that these are heavy duty and very durable.

If you choose this type of chair you can be certain it will help you in your daily live. Some models can even be taken apart so they can be transported in an easy manner. You can also get a special lift to help with the burden of unloading the heavy wheelchair scooter.

Decide what type of wheelchair to choose what you should do in their time and with great caution. Take some of the models for a test drive and discuss with others their experiences with some of the guys.
